Organic Stabilization of Extracellular Elemental Sulfur in a Sulfurovum-Rich Biofilm: A New Role for Extracellular Polymeric Substances?

نویسندگان

چکیده

This work shines light on the role of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) in formation and preservation elemental sulfur biominerals produced by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. We characterized particles within a Sulfurovum -rich biofilm Frasassi Cave System (Italy). The adopt spherical bipyramidal morphologies, display both stable (α-S 8 ) metastable (β-S crystal structures. Elemental is embedded dense matrix EPS, are surrounded organic envelopes rich amide carboxylic groups. Organic encapsulation presence structures consistent with organomineralization, i.e., stabilization organics, mechanism that has previously been observed laboratory studies. research provides new evidence for important microbial EPS mineral environment. hypothesize organics used bacteria minerals outside cell wall as store chemical energy. energy sources (in form solid electron acceptor) biofilms potential requires further investigation.

Biodegradability of biofilm extracellular polymeric substances.

This study discovered that biofilm extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are biodegradable by their own producers and by other microorganisms when they are starved. The study was performed in a comparative fashion to examine the biodegradability of biofilm EPS by the microorganisms from the original biofilm (its own producers) and from activated sludge (other microorganisms). Four distinctiv...

Biosynthesis of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) and Its Role in Microbial Biofilm Formation

Microbial biofilm formed on abiotic surfaces is an important area of research because of the wide range of possible affects and the disinfectant resistance of the cells. The colonization of solid surfaces by microorganisms is a very complicated process that depends mostly on extracellular molecule production. The biosynthesis of EPS reflected not only the attachment and aggregation process but ...

Optimization of Carbon and Nitrogen Sources for Extracellular Polymeric Substances Production by Chryseobacterium indologenes MUT.2

Background: Bacterial Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) are environmental friendly and versatile polymeric materials that are used in a wide range of industries such as: food, textile, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. To make the production process of the EPS cost-effective, improvements in the production yield is required which could be implemented through application of processes such a...

Role of extracellular polymeric substances in the surface chemical reactivity of Hymenobacter aerophilus, a psychrotolerant bacterium.

Bacterial surface layers, such as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), are known to play an important role in metal sorption and biomineralization; however, there have been very few studies investigating how environmentally induced changes in EPS production affect the cell's surface chemistry and reactivity. Acid-base titrations, cadmium adsorption assays, and Fourier transform infrared sp...

Spatiotemporal distribution of different extracellular polymeric substances and filamentation mediate Xylella fastidiosa adhesion and biofilm formation

Microorganism pathogenicity strongly relies on the generation of multicellular assemblies, called biofilms. Understanding their organization can unveil vulnerabilities leading to potential treatments; spatially and temporally-resolved comprehensive experimental characterization can provide new details of biofilm formation, and possibly new targets for disease control. Here, biofilm formation of...
