Oral health status of asthmatic children using inhaled corticosteroids

Background Due to the increase in prevalence of asthma, especially childhood, oral health problems arising from use asthma medications have become a major concern. Inhaled corticosteroids are widely used since they cornerstone management. This study aimed investigate effects inhaled on and various factors regarding active ingredients inhalers, inhaler-spacer device use, rinsing mouth after administration inhaler, hygiene practices parents` education dental caries susceptibility young children with asthma. Methods Children who were treated for at least 6 months included study. A questionnaire related demographic characteristics was conducted parents examined using mirror probe under unit lighting air-drying teeth. Results Oral status evaluated 115 children, 54 (42-66) old, 61% male 39% female determination dmft-dmfs, DMFT-DMFS, ICDAS II, plaque index gingival index. No statistically significant difference found between sugar-containing sugar-free duration corticosteroid inhaler (p > 0.05). Long-term significantly associated candidiasis (p=0.029). Also, results showed that mothers` educational level had effect children`s dmft/dmfs =0.049; p =0.005). Conclusion immunosuppression, long-term enhances risk development opportunistic pathogen candida. Regular visits preventive treatments needed these patients healthy status.
