Optimization of acrylic-styrene latex-based biofilms as a platform for biological indoor air treatment

Biotechnologies have emerged as a promising solution for indoor air purification with the potential to overcome inherent limitations of treatment. These include low concentrations and variability pollutants mass-transfer problems caused by pollutant hydrophobicity. A new latex-based biocoating was herein optimized abatement volatile organic compounds (VOCs) toluene, trichloroethylene, n-hexane, ?-pinene using acclimated activated sludge dominated members phylum Patescibacteria. The influence water content, presence absorbing compounds, latex pretreatment, biomass concentration, load tested on VOC removal efficiency (RE) varying formulation mixtures. Overall, hexane trichloroethylene (<30%), while high REs (>90%) were consistently recorded toluene pinene. assays demonstrated benefits operating at content in biocoating, either including mineral medium or latex-biomass performance likely limited rather than concentration biocoating. supported superior pinene suspension when loading rate increased factor 4.
