Optimisation of variable speed limits at the freeway lane drop bottleneck

چکیده

The primary objectives of this study were to use variable speed limits (VSL) upstream freeway lane drop maintain capacity and reduce congestion. As driving behaviours are the main reasons leading microscopic simulation can reflect precisely, simulations first used test scenarios. objective function constraints determined according traffic engineering practice optimised using a modified genetic algorithm (GA) based on get optimal limit combination. GA guarantee solution diversity results. Then, cell transmission model, macroscopic flow was crosscheck simulated Both analysis results demonstrated that VSL could only improve efficiency if set appropriately. This provided new process from aspects for analysing problems.

Exploratory analysis of an optimal variable speed control system for a recurrently congested freeway bottleneck

This study presents two models for proactive variable speed limit (VSL) control on a recurrently congested freeway segment. The proposed model uses embedded traffic flow relations to predict the evolution of congestion patterns over the projected time horizon, and then computes the time-varying optimal speed limit to smooth traffic flows. To contend with the uncertainties associated with driver...

MPC-based optimal coordination of variable speed limits to suppress shock waves in freeway traffic

At freeway bottlenecks shock waves may appear. These shock waves result in longer travel times and in sudden, large variations in the speeds of the vehicles, which could lead to unsafe and dangerous situations. Dynamic speed limits can be used to eliminate or at least to reduce the effects of shock waves. However, in order to prevent the occurrence of new shock waves and/or negative impacts on ...

Experimental Characterization of Multi-lane Freeway Traffic Upstream of an Off-ramp Bottleneck

TRAFFIC UPSTREAM OF AN OFF-RAMP BOTTLENECK Juan Carlos Muñoz and Carlos F. Daganzo Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Institute of Transportation Studies University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 (March 31, 2000) Abstract This report describes field observations of multi-lane freeway traffic upstream of an oversaturated off-ramp. It is based on empirical evidence from free...

Modeling Freeway Lane Changing Behavior

Drivers continuously evaluate the surrounding traffic and the roadway environment, and make decisions about lanes and travel speed. The objective of this thesis is to develop a lane changing model that can be used in microscopic traffic simulation models to capture drivers' lane changing behavior. Lane change is modeled as a sequence of four steps: decision to consider a lane change, choice of ...

Freeway speed limits and traffic fatalities in Washington State.

BACKGROUND In 1987 individual states in the USA were allowed to raise speed limits on rural freeways from 55 to 65 mph. Analyses of the impact of the increased speed limits on highway safety have produced conflicting results. OBJECTIVE To determine if the 1987 speed limit increase on Washington State's rural freeways affected the incidence of fatal crashes or all crashes on rural freeways, or...
