Optimisation of Signal Timing at Intersections with Waiting Areas

Unconventional geometric designs such as continu-ous-flow intersections, U-turns, and contraflow left-turn lanes have been proposed to reduce conflicts improve intersection efficiency. Having a waiting area at signalised is an unconventional de-sign that used widely in China Japan traffic capacity. Many studies shown areas capacity greatly, but few con-sidered how the benefits of this design from aspect signal optimisation. Comparing start-up process intersections with without areas, work explores influenc-es vehicle transit time, proposes two optimisation strategies, establishes unified calculation model. Taking maximisation function, cycle model derived for over-saturated intersections. Finally, relationship among waiting-area storage capacity, ca-pacity discussed using field survey data. The results cases show optimising scheme helps delays by 10–15%.
