Optimal load rating-based inspection planning of corroded steel girders using Markov decision process

Steel girder bridges are vulnerable to corrosion. To maintain their safety above a predefined target level, the load rating can be computed from inspection results and guide following maintenance actions. Optimizing based on ratings has substantial practical economic relevance. Load rating-based strategies categorized whether interval replacement criteria fixed or flexible. Existing studies focus intervals throughout service life. In general, not optimal for planning. reduce life-cycle cost, aged steel girders may inspected repaired in an adaptive manner. this end, method Markov decision process (MDP) is proposed compare cost of four policies (i.e. uniform non-uniform interval, threshold). planning formulated as MDP plans obtained using dynamic programming. The conventional approach discretize states cannot accurately approximate non-stationary deterioration process, while state augmentation successful doing but will increase computational cost. A comparison two approaches made investigate effects bridge under corrosion attack used illustrative example. show that plan with threshold technique near-optimal.
