Optimal Elastic Wing for Flapping-Wing Robots Through Passive Morphing

نویسندگان

چکیده

Flapping wing robots show promise as platforms for safe and efficient flight in near-human operations, thanks to their ability agile maneuver or perch at a low Reynolds number. The growing trend the automatization of these has go hand with an increase payload capacity. This work provides new passive morphing prototype this type UAV. is based on biased elastic joint holistic research also includes modelling, simulation optimization scheme, thus allowing adapt any flapping robot. model been validated through experiments available platform, it demonstrated that can lift robot under study by up 16% real 10% estimated consumption reduction.

Passive Wing Rotation in Flexible Flapping Wing Aerodynamics

Insect wings are flexible. For rigid wings lift enhancing unsteady aerodynamics mechanisms, such as delayed stall via leading-edge vortices (LEVs), wake-capture, and rotational forces, characterize the lift generation of a hovering insect. We have uncovered a novel mechanism that fruit fly size insects can utilize to further increase the lift by adjusting its wing shape passively: A pair of a L...

Morphing Wing Technologies Research

The development of innovative adaptive structures on UAVs (and UUVs), such as morphing wings, can potentially reduce system complexity by eliminating control surfaces and their auxiliary equipment. This technology has the potential of allowing a UAV to adapt to different mission requirements or executing a particular mission more effectively. The first part of the paper deals with a review of m...

Passive torque regulation in an underactuated flapping wing robotic insect

Recent developments in millimeter-scale fabrication processes have led to rapid progress towards creating airborne flapping wing robots based on Dipteran (two winged) insects. Previous work to regulate forces and torques generated by flapping wings has focused on controlling wing trajectory. An alternative approach uses underactuated mechanisms with tuned dynamics to passively regulate these fo...

Passive Aerodynamic Drag Balancing in a Flapping-Wing Robotic Insect

Flapping-wing robotic platforms based on Dipteran insects have demonstrated lift to weight ratios greater than 1, but research into regulating the aerodynamic forces produced by their wings has largely focused on active wing trajectory control. In an alternate approach, a flapping-wing drivetrain design that passively balances aerodynamic drag torques is presented. A discussion of the dynamic p...

Footprints of a flapping wing

Birds have to flap their wings to generate the needed thrust force, which powers them through the air. But how exactly do flapping wings create such force, and at what amplitude and frequency should they operate? These questions have been asked by many researchers. It turns out that much of the secret is hidden in the wake left behind the flapping wing. Exemplified by the study of Andersen et a...
