Optimal control of a NASCAR – specification race car

This paper adapts the minimum-lap-time simulation technologies developed in Formula One to NASCAR. The adaptation process requires recognition of variable lateral curvature some tracks, as well asymmetries NASCAR-specification race cars that have been configured for high-speed oval tracks are dominated by left-hand cornering. These include different suspension characteristics on left- and right-hand ends each axle, tyres car's aerodynamic performance. results compare optimal control calculations, industrial simulation-based predictions race-captured telemetry data. For most part, these various data sources good agreement, with importance camber highlighted. It is demonstrated how car drivers find best compromise between conflicting objectives exploiting additional available outside variable-camber increasing travelled distance racing line cornering curvature.
