Optical phase singularities and superluminal motion in unbounded space

چکیده

In this paper, we summarize a remarkable result obtained by Soskin et al. in Phys Rev A 56, 4064 (1997). We show that for an on-axis superposition of two different-waist Laguerre-Gauss beams with numbers (0, n) and m), the topological charge equals TC=m up to plane where waist radii become same, given beam m) has greater radius, changing TC=n after plane. This occurs because initial op-tical vortex on different axis-centered circles there are (n – vortices TC= +1 –1. On approaching above-specified plane, -1 "depart" infinity higher-than-light speed, TC total becoming equal TC=n. If, contrary, smaller waist, then n path from said n–m –1 "arrive" speed.

Phase singularities in scale-space

This paper concerns the use of phase information from band-pass signals for the measurement of binocular disparity, optic ow, and image orientation. Towards this end, one of the important properties of band-pass phase information is its stability with respect to small geometric deformations and contrast changes. However, in particular regions phase can also be very unstable due to the occurrenc...

Superluminal optical phase conjugation: Pulse reshaping and instability

We theoretically investigate the response of optical phase conjugators to incident probe pulses. In the stable ~subthreshold! operating regime of an optical phase conjugator it is possible to transmit probe pulses with a superluminally advanced peak, whereas conjugate reflection is always subluminal. In the unstable ~abovethreshold! regime, superluminal response occurs both in reflection and in...

Optical Phase Space Contours

Advances in optical coherence tomography (OCT) rely on the availability of broadband light that is spatially coherent. We present a technique to characterize coherence properties of broadband light using optical phasespace contours in transverse momentum and position. We demonstrate that these contour plots can be directly measured by a simple heterodyne imaging scheme possessing high dynamic r...

Superluminal motion and closed signal curves

We discuss some properties of Lorentz invariant theories which allow for superluminal motion. We show that, if signals are always sent forward in time, closed curves along which signals propagate can be formed. This leads to problems with causality and with the second law of thermodynamics. Only if one singles out one frame with respect to which all signals travel forward in time, the formation...

Optical phase singularities in detection of laser beam collimation.

Optical phase singularities, also called optical vortices, are known to have applications in various branches of optics. Here the role played by optical vortices in collimation testing is explained. Interference and a diffractive experimental setup in which the presence of an optical vortex permits collimation testing are presented. It is shown that the moire fringes that aid in collimation det...
