Opposing health effects of hybridization for conservation

چکیده

The continuing decline of many natural plant and animal populations emphasizes the importance conservation strategies. Hybridization as a management tool has proven successful in introducing gene flow to small, inbred populations, but can be also associated with health risks. For example, hybridization change susceptibility infection either direction due heterosis (hybrid vigor) outbreeding depression, such effects have rarely been considered genetic populations. Here, we investigated experimental outcrossing between critically endangered Saimaa landlocked salmon (Salmo salar m. sebago) genetically more diverse Atlantic (S. salar) on susceptibility. We exposed parent their hybrids two parasites that commonly infect these species, bacterium Flavobacterium columnare macroparasitic fluke Diplostomum pseudospathaceum. found had lower survival during bacterial epidemic, higher resistance against fluke, compared salmon. Hybrids showed intermediate resistance, suggesting decreased one parasite, concurrently increased it another. Our results emphasize considering different types infections when employing for conservation.

Hybridization and the species problem in conservation

Most biologists recognize the “species phenomenon” as a real pattern in nature: Biodiversity is characterized by discontinuities between recognizable groups classified as species. Many conservation laws focus on preventing species extinction. However, species are not fixed. Discontinuities evolve gradually and sometimes disappear. Exactly how to define particular species is not always obvious. ...

Opposing effects of gibberellin and ethylene.

Whereas gibberellin and ethylene may both hasten abscission development in explant tissues (6, 7), and may provoke simi, lar actions in releasing some dormant buds or seeds (11, 17) in several growth functions these 2 regulators may have opposing types of effects. For example, ethylene and gibberellin (GA) ihave opposite effects in senescence development (3, 13). The reports that gibberellin can...

Quantitative evaluation of hybridization and the impact on biodiversity conservation

Anthropogenic hybridization is an increasing conservation threat worldwide. In South Africa, recent hybridization is threatening numerous ungulate taxa. For example, the genetic integrity of the near-threatened bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus pygargus) is threatened by hybridization with the more common blesbok (D. p. phillipsi). Identifying nonadmixed parental and admixed individuals is challeng...
