Opening up the court: analyzing player performance across tennis Grand Slams

Abstract In tennis, the Australian Open, French Wimbledon, and US Open are four most prestigious events (Grand Slams). These Grand Slams differ in composition of court surfaces, when they played year, which city hosts players. Individual come with different expectations, it is often thought that some players achieve better results at than others. It also differences may be attributed, least partially, to surface type courts. For example, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Serena Williams have achieved their best on clay, grass, hard courts, respectively. This paper explores among Slams, while adjusting for confounders such as tour, competitor strength, player attributes. More specifically, we examine effect Slam performance matches from 2013 2019. We take two approaches modeling these data: (1) a mixed-effects model accounting both tournament features (2) models emphasize individual performance. identify across level.
