Onsager's variational principle in active soft matter

چکیده

Onsager's variational principle (OVP) was originally proposed by Lars Onsager in 1931 [L. Onsager, $Phys. Rev.$, 1931, $37$, 405]. This fundamental provides a very powerful tool for formulating thermodynamically consistent models. It can also be employed to find approximate solutions, especially the study of soft matter dynamics. In this work, OVP is extended and applied dynamic modeling active such as suspensions bacteria aggregates animal cells. We first extend general formulation dynamics where forces are included external non-conservative forces. then use analyze directional motion individual units: molecular motor walking on stiff biofilament toy two-sphere microswimmer. Next, we formulate diffuse-interface model an polar droplet solid substrate. addition generalized hydrodynamic equations fluids bulk region, have derived boundary conditions. Finally, consider thin under lubrication approximation. derive film equation employ approximation spreading laws droplet. By incorporating activity biological systems into OVP, develop approach construct models better understanding emergent behaviors cells cell or tissues.

Onsager's Variational Principle in Soft Matter Dynamics

In soft matter, many equations have been proposed to describe the complex behavior of the system in non-equilibrium state. Examples are (i) the phase separation kinetics (model H) : the coupled equations for the component diffusion and the fluid flow, (ii) the gel dynamics: the coupled equation for the permeation of solvent and the deformation of gel, (iii) nemato-hydrodynamics: the equations d...

$(varphi_1, varphi_2)$-variational principle

In this paper we prove that if $X $ is a Banach space, then for every lower semi-continuous bounded below function $f, $ there exists a $left(varphi_1, varphi_2right)$-convex function $g, $ with arbitrarily small norm,  such that $f + g $ attains its strong minimum on $X. $ This result extends some of the  well-known varitional principles as that of Ekeland [On the variational principle,  J. Ma...

Onsager’s variational principle in soft matter: introduction and application to the dynamics of adsorption of proteins onto fluid membranes

Lipid bilayers are unique soft materials operating in general in the low Reynolds limit. While their shape is predominantly dominated by curvature elasticity as in a solid shell, their in-plane behavior is that of a largely inextensible viscous fluid. These two behaviors, however, are tightly coupled through the membrane geometry. Indeed, shape transformations necessarily induce lipid flows tha...
