Online belief elicitation methods

چکیده

How well do incentivized belief elicitation procedures work in online settings? We evaluate the quality of beliefs elicited from respondents, comparing several characteristics two widely used complex mechanisms (the Binarized Scoring Rule – BSR and a stochastic variation Becker–deGroot–Marschak mechanism—BDM) against flat fee baseline for variety (induced probabilities, first-order factual knowledge, second-order knowledge others). find that flat-fee method requires least amount time, BDM is most difficult to understand, there are no differences average accuracy induced across conditions. However, methods significantly different terms frequency reported at exactly 50%: leads mass on this belief, followed by BSR. Regarding beliefs, we also less-educated participants’ higher incentives treatments, attention, numeracy, education positively associated with these methods. Our results suggest environments may depend less formal incentive compatibility properties procedure (whether prevents “dishonest” reporting) than difficulty comprehending task how induce cognitive effort (thereby inducing subjects quantify or construct their beliefs).

Dynamic Belief Elicitation∗

At t = 1, an expert has (probabilistic) information about a random outcome X. The expert obtains further information as time passes, up to t = N at which X is publicly revealed. (How) Can a protocol be devised that induces the expert, as a strict best response, to reveal at the outset his prior assessment of both X and the information flows he anticipates and, subsequently, what information he ...

Learning and Belief Elicitation: Observer Effects

This paper asks a simple methodological question about belief elicitation: Does asking subjects about their beliefs during a repeated game change the way subjects play the game? In particular, we ask if belief elicitation changes behavior in the direction of belief based learning models, away from reinforcement learning models. Based on a carefully designed laboratory experiment, we show that p...

This Supplementary Appendix includes additional results and the proofs omitted from the main text. Throughout, references are to the main text and to the appendix of the main text, unless they include the prefix “SA.” It proceeds as follows. Survey of Preference Elicitation Methods

As people increasingly rely on interactive decision support systems to choose products and make decisions, building effective interfaces for these systems becomes more and more challenging due to the explosion of on-line information, the initial incomplete user preference and user’s cognitive and emotional limitations of information processing. How to accurately elicit user’s preference thereby...

POET: The Online Preference Elicitation Tool

If the goal of eliciting accurate user preferences over a com plex value space is to be realized, the elicitation process must be through while at the same time not overly burdensome to the user. An ideal preference elicitation tool would max imize the information about preferences acquired from the user while minimizing the number of queries required. To this end, we present POET: the Online...
