چکیده
Abstract It has been reported that speakers of Danish understand more Swedish than vice versa. One reason for this asymmetry might be spoken is closer to written We hypothesise literate use their orthographic knowledge decode Swedish. To test hypothesis, first-language (L1) were confronted with in a translation task. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) elicited study the online responses during decoding operations. Results showed ERPs words whose pronunciation was inconsistent spelling significantly negative-going consistent between 750 ms and 900 after stimulus onset. Together higher word-recognition scores items, our data provide strong evidence activation L1 orthography enhances word recognition Danish.

Orthographic activation in spoken word recognition Automatic activation of orthography in spoken word recognition: Pseudohomograph priming
There is increasing evidence that orthographic information has an impact on spoken word processing. However, much of this evidence comes from tasks that are subject to strategic effects. In the three experiments reported here, we examined activation of orthographic information during spoken word processing within a paradigm that is unlikely to involve strategic factors, namely auditory priming ...
متن کاملSwedish Is Beautiful, Danish Is Ugly? Investigating the Link between Language Attitudes and Spoken Word Recognition
This paper investigates the hypothesis that attitudes towards a lin guistic variety and intelligibility of that variety are linked. This is done by elicit ing language attitudes and word recognition scores in 154 Danish and Swedish schoolchildren and adolescents between 7 and 16 years. Language attitudes to wards the neighboring language are elicited by means of a matchedguise ex periment ...
متن کاملIs spoken Danish less intelligible than Swedish?
The most straightforward way to explain why Danes understand spoken Swedish relatively better than Swedes understand spoken Danish would be that spoken Danish is intrinsically a more difficult language to understand than spoken Swedish. We discuss circumstantial evidence suggesting that Danish is intrinsically poorly intelligible. We then report on a formal experiment in which we tested the int...
متن کاملThe Activation of Embedded Words in Spoken Word Recognition.
The current study investigated how listeners understand English words that have shorter words embedded in them. A series of auditory-auditory priming experiments assessed the activation of six types of embedded words (2 embedded positions × 3 embedded proportions) under different listening conditions. Facilitation of lexical decision responses to targets (e.g., pig) associated with words embedd...
متن کاملIndividual differences in online spoken word recognition: Implications for SLI.
Thirty years of research has uncovered the broad principles that characterize spoken word processing across listeners. However, there have been few systematic investigations of individual differences. Such an investigation could help refine models of word recognition by indicating which processing parameters are likely to vary, and could also have important implications for work on language imp...
