Ongoing declines of woodland birds: Are restoration plantings making a difference?

چکیده

Woodland birds are a species assemblage of conservation concern, and their persistence in fragmented agricultural landscapes is dependent on both the preservation existing woodland remnants implementation restoration plantings. However, little known about habitat-use landscapes. We present detailed, population-oriented study temperate eucalypt plantings remnant patches South-west Slopes bioregion New South Wales, Australia. First, we undertook 3-yr mark–recapture project to assess annual survival site fidelity remnants. supplemented our recapture efforts with resightings color-banded individuals. Second, tracked individual two species, Superb Fairywren (Malurus cyaneus) Willie Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), documented snapshots home ranges movement patterns during breeding season. Annual bird was lower than expected (51%). Home were positively correlated patch size, constrained by edges linear sites. Fairywrens Wagtails more likely travel longer distances between substrates while foraging engaged significant gap-crossing (up 400 m) adjacent habitat patches. Our findings indicate that (1) isolation certain configurations place resident at an energetic disadvantage, (2) area, populations continuing decline. recommend landscape-scale programs aim address ongoing population declines. Studies such as ours conducted over time periods would provide deeper understanding use processes

Consequences of inconsistently classifying woodland birds

There is a longstanding debate regarding the need for ecology to develop consistent terminology. On one hand, consistent terminology would aid in synthesizing results between studies and ease communication of results. On the other hand, there is no proof that standardizing terminology is necessary and it could limit the scope of research in certain fields. This article is the first to provide e...

Answering the question: are we making a difference?

Performance-based payment schemes are nothing new for not-for-profit organizations that use commercial business models, such as social marketing and social franchise programs. Perhaps because of their familiarity with using output-based budgeting processes, these programs have advanced the development of different types of modeling techniques for describing impacts on health outcomes, and appli...

Social Dominance and Energy Reserves in Wintering Woodland Birds’ Vladimir

To understand animals’ tactics for surviving the winter season, we need to know how they manage their energy reserves. Fat reserves in small birds in winter generally increase with starvation risk. Studies have documented higher fat reserves in response to various sources of variability in energy intake or expenditure. Using three woodland species, Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis), Tuf...
