On the use of shape memory alloys for deployable passive heat radiators in space satellites

Abstract The present work presents a multifunctional structure for space engineering application part of the TOPDESS project, funded by ESA. main aim project is design thermal control device able to deploy through passive actuation. A combined has been designed, made up Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP) foldable heat exchanger and Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wire. deployment SMA wire conceived be controlled contact with source conduction along Since sources are lumped subject convection, temperature gradient develops monodimensional mode predict behavior an subjected spatial gradient, presented in this paper. results show that system can carry out folding unfolding cycles rotation angles greater than 80° only if uniform distribution; case achievable angle about 20°. analysis states feasibility actuation system, highlighting critical technological aspects, lay groundwork future development whole system.
