On the role of the right premotor cortex in musical rhythm perception: a dense-Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) mapping approach

چکیده
Abstract Humans have the unique ability to flexibly and proactively extract a regular beat from complex auditory patterns, such as music. Recent neuropysiological neuroimaging studies demonstrated that perception rely on interactions between motor systems, specifically premotor cortex (PMC) supplementary areas (SMA/pre-SMA). However, how planning regions in human brain actively contributes is still an open question. To fill this gap, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied over grid of 4 spots covering right dorsal (PMd) medial part (SMA/pre-SMA) PMC, while participants performed Beat Alignment Test (BAT). In particular, 10 Hz triple-pulses TMS immediately before tries detect misalignment metronome realistic musical extract. Results indicated that, independently degree misalignment, most caudal namely PMd pre-SMA, significantly increases probability indicating synchronized with compared sham control condition. Our results provide direct causal evidence specific within PMC houses key mechanisms for perceiving if stimulus respect beat, pointing pivotal role rhythm perception. Effect of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) on Parietal and Premotor Cortex during Planning of Reaching Movements
BACKGROUND Cerebral activation during planning of reaching movements occurs both in the superior parietal lobule (SPL) and premotor cortex (PM), and their activation seems to take place in parallel. METHODOLOGY The activation of the SPL and PM has been investigated using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) during planning of reaching movements under visual guidance. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS A...
متن کاملTranscranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the sensorimotor cortex and medial frontal cortex modifies human pain perception.
OBJECTIVE Although recent neuroimaging studies have shown that painful stimuli can produce activity in multiple cortical areas, the question remains as to the role of each area in particular aspects of human pain perception. To solve this problem we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as an 'interference approach' tool to test the consequence on pain perception of disrupting activity i...

focus on communication in iranian high school language classes: a study of the role of teaching materials in changing the focus onto communication in language classes
The role of pre-SMA for time-critical speech perception - A transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) study
The pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) is engaged in speech comprehension under difficult circumstances such as poor acoustic signal quality, cognitive load, or time-critical conditions. Previous studies found left pre-SMA activated when subjects listen to accelerated speech. Here we tested the functional role of the pre-SMA for accelerated speech comprehension by inducing a transient “virt...
