On the nature of candidate luminous blue variables in M 33 ⋆

Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are a class of highly unstable stars that have been proposed to play a critical role in massive stellar evolution as well as being the progenitors of some of the most luminous supernovae known. However the physical processes underlying their characteristic instabilities are currently unknown. In order to provide observational constraints on this behaviour we have ...

Dusty ring nebulae around new candidate Luminous Blue Variables

We report on the discovery of a further two ring nebulae in the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) Galactic Plane Survey; G24.73+0.69 and G26.47+0.02. Morphologically, both appear similar to the nebulae found around the Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) candidates G79.29+0.46 and Wra 17-96. A central, unresolved point source was identified in both cases – positional coincidence with the star StRS 237 ...

On the population of galactic Luminous Blue Variables

We report the first results of a long term infrared monitoring campaign of known and candidate galactic Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs). In particular, we are able to confirm the LBV nature of G24.73+0.69, a luminous mid-B supergiant associated with a dusty ejection nebula. We find that prior to 2003 September G24.73+0.69 exhibited low amplitude (∆JHK ∼ 0.4 mag) variability, but in the ∼200 day ...

Periods , period changes and the nature of the microvariations of Luminous Blue Variables

We present period determinations of the microvariability of the six luminous blue variables AG Car, HR Car, 164 G Sco, S Dor, R 127, and R 71. In total, we were able to determine 22 periods in these stars, ranging from 18 days up to 195 days. All stars have period changes by up to a factor 4 within time scales of a few hundred days. For all stars the amplitude of the pulsations in V increases w...

Eta Carinae and Other Luminous Blue Variables

Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are believed to be evolved, extremely massive stars close to the Eddington Limit and hence prone to bouts of large-scale, unstable mass loss. I discuss current understanding of the evolutionary state of these objects, the role duplicity may play and known physical characteristics of these stars using the X-ray luminous LBVs Eta Carinae and HD 5980 as test cases.
