On the enzymes’ actions of entomopathogenic fungi against certain indigenous and invasive insect pests

چکیده

Abstract Background Pathogenicity of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) depends mainly on their ability to produce efficient enzymes, which degrade insect’s integument and other cellular components. Lipases are the first enzymes secreted by these fungi, then proteases, phospholipases, chitinases. Results Twenty-six fungal strains, isolated from aphids, Aphis sp., Linnaeus (Homoptera, Aphididae), tomato leaf minor, Liriomyza trifolii , Burgess (Diptera, Agromyzidae) (indigenous insects), red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata Saunders Tephritidae) (invasive insects) were tested for enzymatic activities. showed that majority strains able lipolytic with most active being Aspergillus niger Botryotrichum atrogriseum Cochliobolus spicifer Fusarium chlamydosporum F. proliferatum . Phospholipase was successfully produced 73.1% among flavus A. Mucor racemosus Pochonia chlamydosporia var. catenulata Scopulariopsis brevicaulis highest producers. Proteolytic detected in cultures all except chevalieri M. The best proteolytic strain S. followed A sydowii F semitectum chitinolytic generally weak relatively species belonged B. solani Nigrospora oryzae Quantitative determination chitinase revealed enzyme concentration ranged 3.478 6.44 IU/ml. Conclusion Most had activities, but P. brevicaulis, ones.

Entomopathogenic Fungi Associated with Exotic Invasive Insect Pests in Northeastern Forests of the USA

Mycopathogens of economically important exotic invasive insects in forests of northeastern USA have been the subject of research at the Entomology Research Laboratory, University of Vermont, for the last 20 years. Elongate hemlock scale, European fruit lecanium, hemlock woolly adelgid and pear thrips were analyzed for the presence of mycopathogens, in order to consider the potential for managin...

Action on the Surface: Entomopathogenic Fungi versus the Insect Cuticle

Infections mediated by broad host range entomopathogenic fungi represent seminal observations that led to one of the first germ theories of disease and are a classic example of a co-evolutionary arms race between a pathogen and target hosts. These fungi are able to parasitize susceptible hosts via direct penetration of the cuticle with the initial and potentially determining interaction occurri...

Microbial Control of Pests: Entomopathogenic Fungi as Mycoinsecticides

Within the frame of this ISCB project, a biological approach based on the introduction of specific fungi that are highly pathogenic for Helicoverpa, will be developed to control the dreaded pests. Biological control using insectpathogenic fungi as mycoinsecticides is an appealing alternative to the application of chemicals. Entomophthoralean fungi can easily be massproduced on cheap substrates....

Diversity of Entomopathogenic Fungi: Which Groups Conquered the Insect Body?

The entomopathogenic fungi are organisms that evolved to exploit insects. They comprise a wide range of morphologically, phylogenetically, and ecologically diverse fungal species. Entomopathogenic fungi can be found distributed among five of the eight fungal phyla. Entomopathogens are also present among the ecologically similar but phylogenetically distinct Oomycota or water molds, which belong...

CONTROL OF INSECT PESTS WITH ENTOMOPATHOGENIC NEMATODES I. Control of Weevils with Entomopathogenic Nematodes

Entomopathogenic nematodes in the genus Steinernema and Heterorhabditis have been successfully commercialized as biological control agents for a variety of curculionid species. Nematode-based products have been introduced for: 1) root weevils, Otiorhynchus spp. 2) billbugs, Sphenophorus spp. 3) the apopka weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus, and 4) the citrus root weevil, Pachnaeus litus. Several oth...
