Odor coding in the mammalian olfactory epithelium

چکیده

Abstract Noses are extremely sophisticated chemical detectors allowing animals to use scents interpret and navigate their environments. Odor detection starts with the activation of odorant receptors (ORs), expressed in mature olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) populating mucosa. Different odorants, or different concentrations same odorant, activate unique ensembles ORs. This mechanism combinatorial receptor coding provided a possible explanation as why odorants perceived having distinct odors. Aided by new technologies, several recent studies have found that antagonist interactions also play an important role formation code. These findings mark start era study odorant-receptor add level complexity odor mammals.

Odor representations in the mammalian olfactory bulb.

A first key step in studying a sensory modality is to define how the brain represents the features of the sensory stimulus. This has proven to be a challenge in olfaction, where even the stimulus features have been a matter of considerable debate. In this review, we focus on olfactory representations in the first stage of the olfactory pathway, the olfactory bulb (OB). We examine the diverging ...

A large-scale analysis of odor coding in the olfactory epithelium.

Mammals can perceive and discriminate myriad volatile chemicals as having a distinct odor. Odorants are initially detected by odorant receptors (ORs) on olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in the nose. In the mouse, each OSN expresses one of ∼1000 different OR genes. Although OSNs and their expressed ORs constitute the fundamental units of sensory input to the brain, a comprehensive understanding ...

Robust Odor Coding via Inhalation-Coupled Transient Activity in the Mammalian Olfactory Bulb

It has been proposed that a single sniff generates a "snapshot" of the olfactory world. However, odor coding on this timescale is poorly understood, and it is not known whether coding is invariant to changes in respiration frequency. We investigated this by recording spike trains from the olfactory bulb in awake, behaving rats. During rapid sniffing, odor inhalation triggered rapid and reliable...

Dynamic Ensemble Odor Coding in the Mammalian Olfactory Bulb: Sensory Information at Different Timescales

Neural firing discharges are often temporally patterned, but it is often ambiguous as to whether the temporal features of these patterns constitute a useful code. Here we show in the mouse olfactory bulb that ensembles of projection neurons respond with complex odor- and concentration-specific dynamic activity sequences developing below and above sniffing frequency. Based on this activity, almo...

Olfactory Coding: Inhibition Reshapes Odor Responses

Olfactory information is dramatically restructured as it makes its way through the brain. Recent work using a remarkable experimental preparation has revealed how this transformation is achieved.
