Occurrence, site fidelity, and abundance of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Western Ligurian Sea

چکیده
This study represents the first complete assessment of population dynamics and residency common bottlenose dolphins in Western Ligurian Sea, an area where dolphin sightings have been rare past. Despite being greatly affected by human pressure, information about this is poor sporadic. The took place from April 2018 to December 2020. One hundred seventy‐one dedicated boat surveys were performed year‐round resulting 95 sightings, 123 individuals identified through mark‐recapture photo‐identification techniques. Dolphins found be present year‐round. Most animals (79) used sporadically only 19.5% (24) seen regularly. Bottlenose abundance was estimated at 248 using open POPAN models (CI 95% = 217–284). These results help fill a knowledge gap highlighting regular presence area. Moreover, they represent baseline for future studies investigating trends conservation status

متن کاملThermal tolerance in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).
Water and air temperature are potentially limiting factors to the pole-ward distributions of coastal bottlenose dolphins. This study assessed the lower critical temperature of captive bottlenose dolphins to air temperature (LCT(a)) and water temperature (LCT(w)) through the use of open flow respirometry. Five dolphins, ranging from 14 to 33 years of age and acclimated to the waters of the south...
متن کاملLobomycosis in Offshore Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), North Carolina
Lacazia loboi, a cutaneous fungus, is found in humans and dolphins from transitional tropical (Florida) and tropical (South America) regions. We report 2 cases of lobomycosis in stranded bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and 1 case of lobomycosis-like disease in 1 free-swimming, pelagic, offshore bottlenose dolphin from North Carolina, where no cases have previously been observed.
متن کاملMicrosatellite diversity in captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).
The utility of microsatellites for managing captive Tursiops truncatus was investigated. Specifically the level of genetic diversity among the loci examined and their usefulness for resolving paternity was assessed. Overall a relatively low level of genetic variation was found among captive dolphins. In addition, a high percentage of common alleles was found among dolphins belonging to differen...
متن کاملWhistle matching in wild bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)
Dolphin communication is suspected to be complex, on the basis of their call repertoires, cognitive abilities, and ability to modify signals through vocal learning. Because of the difficulties involved in observing and recording individual cetaceans, very little is known about how they use their calls. This report shows that wild, unrestrained bottlenose dolphins use their learned whistles in m...
