O is for Awesome: National Survey of New Zealand School-Based Well-being and Mental Health Interventions

Abstract Although student well-being and mental health are government-identified responsibilities for New Zealand schools, the extent to which school-based interventions currently delivered is unknown. This survey of a nationally representative sample schools was undertaken identify: what used by primary (elementary) secondary (high) schools; gaps exist between current practice evidence base; ideas staff have improving health; barriers can identify implementing evidence-based suggestions how these may be overcome. Forty from 37 (22 primary, 13 2 composite) participated in semi-structured interviews. Seven key themes were identified: (1) awareness enthusiasm about (2) existence specific support (3) government-sponsored programmes; (4) limitations existing (5) drivers new interventions; (6) perceived implementation (7) future their implementation. Currently, wide range primarily non-evidence based variable manner external providers. Despite there room improvement quality equity intervention delivery.
