Abstract There are still two deficiencies in the study of crack propagation plane steel. One is that there few studies on theory cracking and criterion from strain field at tip; other using block discrete element method to explore propagation. In view above points, this paper proposes a strength explain extension tensile cracks shear This assumes: (1) Tensile grow along direction maximum principal strain. When γ reaches critical value, begin grow; (2) Shear most dangerous stress state. Mohr circle exceeds Coulomb failure line, starts expand. addition, applies simulate macro-mechanical response characteristics steel under load evolution process cracks. It shown stress-strain curve appears elastic, stagnant, fluctuating, falling back, etc. The basic law, stable unstable growth during whole loading process.
