Numerical simulation of Fluid–Structure Interaction problems with viscoelastic fluids using a log-conformation reformulation

In this paper the numerical simulation of interaction between Oldroyd-B viscoelastic fluid flows and hyperelastic solids is approached. The algorithm employed a classical block-iterative scheme, in which solid mechanics problems are solved sequentially. A Galerkin finite element approach has been for approximation solid, while flow equations approximated using stabilized method based on Variational Multi-Scale to overcome instabilities method. To be able deal with dominant elasticity, log-conformation reformulation constitutive equation can employed; here extended Fluid–Structure Interaction problems. Several examples presented discussed assess robustness proposed scheme its applicability fluids elasticity interacting solids.
