Numerical Modeling and Design of CFRP-Strengthened Short Steel Tubular Columns in Fire

This paper presents the details of a numerical study aimed at investigating fire performance carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP)-strengthened short square hollow section (SHS) steel columns with and without an insulation system. Steady- transient-state finite-element (FE) models were developed to simulate behavior CFRP-strengthened exposed uniform elevated temperatures insulated standard conditions, respectively. They validated using results authors’ experimental study. A detailed parametric was then conducted steady-state FE model determine influence SHS grade dimensions CFRP strengthening configuration on axial compression capacity deterioration temperatures, based which suitable design equations proposed predict elevated-temperature columns. Fire resistance ratings (FRRs) determined time-temperature profiles from heat-transfer analyses load ratio versus critical temperature analyses. In this study, two types materials (spray-applied CAFCO 300 intumescent paint) investigated, both found provide satisfactory FRRs, where more than 60- 120-min FRRs achieved for most paint, The modeling methods presented in can be used conduct safety designs
