چکیده
Motivated by the inadequacy of conducting atomistic simulations crack propagation using static boundary conditions that do not reflect movement tip, we extend Sinclair's flexible condition algorithm [J. E. Sinclair, Philos. Mag. 31, 647 (1975)] and propose a numerical-continuation-enhanced scheme, enabling full solution paths for cracks to be computed with pseudo-arclength continuation, present method incorporating more detailed far-field information into model next no additional computational cost. The algorithms are ideally suited study details lattice trapping barriers brittle fracture can incorporated density functional theory multiscale quantum classical mechanics molecular calculations. We demonstrate our approach mode-III 2D toy employ it conduct 3D mode-I silicon realistic interatomic potentials, highlighting superiority over employing corresponding condition. In particular, inclusion numerical continuation enables converged results obtained systems containing few thousand atoms, very iterations required compute each new solution. also introduce estimate range admissible stress intensity factors ${K}_{\ensuremath{-}}<K<{K}_{+}$ cheaply its utility on both systems.

Tensile-shear transition in mixed mode I/III fracture
The propensity of the transition of fracture type in either brittle or ductile cracked solid under mixed-mode I and III loading conditions is investigated. A fracture criterion based on the competition of the maximum normal stress and maximum shear stress is utilized. The prediction of the fracture type is determined by comparing smax=rmax at a critical distance from the crack tip to the materi...
متن کاملEffect of Rock Fracture Filling on Mode I and II Fracture Toughness
This paper focuses on some fracture toughness tests performed on the pre-cracked Brazilian specimens of rock-like materials. Also the effect of rock fracture filling on the fracture toughness was considered experimentally. Fracture toughness is a key parameter for studying the crack propagation and fragmentation processes in rock structures. Fracture mechanics is an applicable tool to improve ...
متن کاملCrack Tip Constraint for Anisotropic Sheet Metal Plate Subjected to Mode-I Fracture
On the ground of manufacturing, sheet metal parts play a key role as they cover about half of the production processes. Sheet metals are commonly obtained from rolling and forming processes which causes misalignment of micro structure resulting obvious anisotropic characteristics and micro cracks. Presence of micro cracks poses serious attention, when stresses at the tip reach to the critical v...
متن کاملThe double cantilever beam test applied to mode I fracture characterization of cortical bone tissue.
The primary objective of this work was to analyse the adequacy of the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) test in determining fracture toughness under pure mode I loading of cortical bone tissue. A new data reduction scheme based on specimen compliance and the crack equivalent concept was used to overcome the difficulties inherent in crack monitoring during its growth. It provides a complete resistanc...
متن کاملMode-Transformation and Mode-Continuation Regimes on Waveguiding Structures
In this paper, modal-interaction phenomena on guided-wave structures are investigated using the theory of critical and singular points. It has been previously shown that classical mode coupling is controlled by the functional characteristics of the dispersion equation in the vicinity of a Morse critical point (MCP), which is real valued for typical structures in the lossless case. The purpose o...
