Novel Interaction between a Rabbitfish and Black Corals

چکیده
Herbivorous fishes play important functional roles in coral reef ecosystems, and their influence on mediating competitive dynamics between corals macroalgae is well studied. Nonetheless, direct interactions herbivorous may also be relevant, although these are less Here, we describe a series of observations schools the streaked rabbitfish (Siganus javus) nibbling black (order Antipatharia) at SS Yongala wreck, within Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. We provide hypothesis that explain this behaviour, which, if confirmed, would represent mechanism influencing health corals. Moreover, interaction extends typical coral–algae competition for space paradigm furthers knowledge complex relationships organisms.

The ecological success of shallow-water reef-building corals (Hexacorallia: Scleractinia) is framed by their intimate endosymbiosis with photosynthetic dinoflagellates in the genus Symbiodinium (zooxanthellae).
