“Not as Safe as I Believed”: Differences in Perceived and Self-Reported Cycling Behavior between Riders and Non-Riders

Cycling behavior remains a key issue for explaining several traffic causalities occurring every day. However, recent studies have shown how the assessment of own safety-related behaviors on road may substantially differ from third parties assess them. Thus, aim this study was to evaluate differences between cyclists’ self-reported and proxy-reported that other (non-cyclist) users perceive bike riders. For purpose, used data two samples: (i) 1064 cyclists (M = 32.83 years) answering Behavior Questionnaire—CBQ, (ii) 1070 non-cyclists 30.83 an adapted version CBQ external raters—ECBQ. The results show greatly in terms all behavioral factors composing model, i.e., violations, riding errors, positive behaviors. Also, raters (non-cyclists) are those targeting significantly riskier than by cyclists. These discrepancies perceived give rise conflicting viewpoints interaction bicycle riders users.
