Nonlinear free surface flows past a semi- infinite flat plate in water of finite depth
We consider the steady free surface two-dimensional flow past a semi-infinite flat plate in water of a constant finite depth. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid, incompressible and the flow is irrotational; surface tension at the free surface is neglected. Our concern is with the periodic waves generated downstream of the plate edge. These can be characterized by a depth-based Froude number, F...
متن کاملNonlinear surface lattice coupler.
We study two-component surface solitons in a pair of linearly coupled truncated waveguiding arrays with the Kerr nonlinearity. Symmetric solitons have a very small stability area, while those that are antisymmetric and asymmetric are stable in vast regions. Below a critical value of the coupling constant, branches of the symmetric and asymmetric modes separate, and accordingly, asymmetric solit...
متن کاملDiffusion of noninteracting particles into a semi-infinite lattice.
Consider a gas of noninteracting particles diffusing into a semi-infinite lattice, Z+×ZD−1, subject to exclusion of double occupancy. An exact closed set of equations can be obtained and solved (in closed form) for the single-site occupancies or densities. Equations for the n-site occupancies couple only to such functions for n and n-1 sites, as for an infinite lattice. Their analysis reveals t...
متن کاملThe study of surface states in a semi-infinite crystal
An infinite three dimensional (3D) crystal can be constructed by an infinite number of parallel 2D (hkl) crystal planes (CPs) coupled to each other. Based on lattice model Hamiltonian with the hopping between the nearest neighbor (1NN) CPs and all possible neighbor hoppings within each CP, we analytically prove that a (hkl) cut crystal will not accommodate any surface states if the original inf...
متن کاملDiscrete solitons and nonlinear surface modes in semi-infinite waveguide arrays.
We discuss the formation of self-trapped localized states near the edge of a semi-infinite array of nonlinear optical waveguides. We study a crossover from nonlinear surface states to discrete solitons by analyzing the families of odd and even modes centered at finite distances from the surface and reveal the physical mechanism of the nonlinearity-induced stabilization of surface modes.
