چکیده

The Rayleigh–Taylor instability at the interface of two sheared fluid layers in a horizontal channel is investigated absence inertia. dynamics flow described by nonlinear lubrication equation which solved numerically for adverse density stratifications. early-time features number finger-like protrusions different heights interface. fingers travel speeds leading to sequence merging events after eventually settles near-saturated state, comprising only one finger that includes most lower fluid. For sufficiently large stratifications, final state spans height and thin films each wall, both undergo chaotic dynamics, but finite-time touch-down/touch-up shown be precluded shear flow. An asymptotic analysis large-Bond-number limit (intense stratification) reveals finer structure including Landau–Levich-type connection regions. solutions are compared with numerical results model as well direct simulations, excellent agreement observed between three terms interfacial structure, wave speed film thicknesses.

Stability of Unstably Stratified Shear Flow in a Channel Under Non-Boussinesq Conditions

We investigate the linear stability of unstably strati ed Poiseuille ow between two horizontal parallel plates under non-Boussinesq conditions. It is shown, that Squire's transformation can be used to reduce the three-dimensional stability problem to an equivalent two-dimensional one. The eigenvalue problem, consisting of the generalized Orr-Sommerfeld equations, is solved numerically using an ...

Evolution of a stratified rotating shear layer with horizontal shear. Part 2. Nonlinear evolution

Direct numerical simulation is used to investigate the nonlinear evolution of a horizontally oriented mixing layer with uniform stable stratification and coordinate system rotation about the vertical axis. The important dimensional parameters governing inviscid dynamics are maximum shear S(t), buoyancy frequency N, angular velocity of rotation Ω and characteristic shear thickness L(t). The effe...

Stability analysis of stratified two-phase liquid-gas flow in a horizontal pipe

This study aimed at linear stability analysis of the stratified two-phase liquid-gas flow in a horizontal pipe. First, equations governing the linear stability of flow in each phase and boundary conditions were obtained. The governing equations were eigenvalue Orr Sommerfeld equations which are difficult and stiff problems to solve. After obtaining the velocity profiles of the gas and liquid ph...

Nonlinear Dynamics and Wall Touch-Up in Unstably Stratified Multilayer Flows in Horizontal Channels under the Action of Electric Fields

This study considers the nonlinear dynamics of stratified immiscible fluids when an electric field acts perpendicular to the direction of gravity. A particular setup is investigated in detail, namely, two stratified fluids inside a horizontal channel of infinite extent. The fluids are taken to be perfect dielectrics, and a constant horizontal field is imposed along the channel. The sharp interf...

Linear dynamics of the solar convection zone: excitation of waves in unstably stratified shear flows

In this paper we report on the nonresonant conversion of convectively unstable linear gravity modes into acoustic oscillation modes in shear flows. The convectively unstable linear gravity modes can excite acoustic modes with similar wave-numbers. The frequencies of the excited oscillations may be qualitatively higher than the temporal variation scales of the source flow, while the frequency sp...
