Nonequilibrium Capillary Pressure of a Miscible Meniscus

چکیده
We examine the dynamics of a miscible displacement in capillary, calculating nonequilibrium capillary pressure moving (and slowly diffusing) meniscus. During displacement, varies with time following stretching and smearing interface. The remains different from zero for long (on diffusion scale), slowing displacement. This is however completely ignored by all theories currently available practical modeling displacements capillaries porous matrices.

Meniscus motion in a prewetted capillary
A conventional description of the effect of meniscus friction is based on the concept of the dynamic contact angle u, which depends on the meniscus velocity V according to the Tanner law, u}V. However, recent high-resolution experiments on spontaneous uptake of wetting fluids by capillaries have questioned the universality of the Tanner law. We analyze a mechanism underlying the phenomenologica...
متن کاملThe marching velocity of the capillary meniscus in a microchannel∗
In this paper we describe an experimental method and an analytical model for characterizing the surface energy inside a microchannel of micrometer size by measuring the marching velocity or position of a capillary meniscus. This method is based on the fact that the force summation of the meniscus surface tension and the filling reservoir gravitation might produce a pressure to pull liquid into ...
متن کاملCapillary meniscus interaction between a microparticle and a wall
An analytical expression for the shape of the capillary menis, R formed around a vertical cylinder or spherical particle near a vertical wall is derived by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The forces of capillary interaction bctwccn the particle (cylinder) and the wall arc calculated. The resulting expressions are valid when the distance bctwecn the particle (cylinder) and the...
متن کاملCapillary imbibition of aqueous foams by miscible and nonmiscible liquids.
When put in contact with a large liquid drop, dry foams wick owing to surface-tension-driven flows until reaching equilibrium. This work is devoted to the dynamics of this imbibition process. We consider imbibition of both wetting or nonwetting liquid, by putting the dry foam into contact either with the foaming solution that constitutes the foam or with organic oils. Indeed, with the appropria...
متن کاملVariable density and viscosity, miscible displacements in capillary tubes
The displacement of a more viscous fluid by a miscible, less viscous one of lower density in a horizontal capillary tube is studied by means of Stokes flow simulations. Both axisymmetric and three-dimensional simulations are conducted at Péclet numbers up to 104, in order to resolve discrepancies between earlier simulations by [C.Y. Chen, E. Meiburg, Miscible displacements in capillary tubes. P...
