Non-frontal facial expression recognition based on salient facial patches

Abstract Methods using salient facial patches (SFPs) play a significant role in research on expression recognition. However, most SFP methods use only frontal face images or videos for recognition, and they do not consider head position variations. We contend that can be an effective approach recognizing expressions under different rotations. Accordingly, we propose algorithm, called profile (PSFP), to achieve this objective. First, detect landmarks estimate poses from images, tree-structured part model is used pose-free landmark localization. Second, obtain the are selected detected while avoiding their overlap transcending of actual range. To analyze PSFP recognition performance, three classical approaches local feature extraction, specifically histogram oriented gradients (HOG), binary pattern, Gabor, were applied extract features. Experimental results Radboud Faces Database show with HOG features higher accuracies
