No fruits without color: Cross-modal priming and EEG reveal different roles for different features across semantic categories

چکیده
Category-specific impairments witnessed in patients with semantic deficits have broadly dissociated into natural and artificial kinds. However, how the category of food (more specifically, fruits vegetables) fits this distinction has been difficult to interpret, given a pattern deficit that inconsistently mapped onto either kind, despite its intuitive membership domain. The present study explores effects manipulation visual sensory (i.e., color) or functional orientation) feature on consequential processing vegetables (and tools, by comparison), first at behavioral then neural level. categorization fruits/vegetables) utensils) entities was investigated via cross–modal priming. Reaction time analysis indicated reduction priming for color-modified orientation-modified entities. Standard event-related potentials (ERP) performed, addition linear classification. For entities, N400 effect central channel sites observed condition compared relative normal orientation conditions, difference confirmed classification analysis. Conversely, there no significant between conditions These findings provide strong evidence color is an integral property fruits/vegetables, thus substantiating claim feature-based guides as function category.

Semantic priming of different affective categories.
The authors investigated affective semantic priming using a lexical decision task with 4 affective categories of related word pairs: neutral, happy, fearful, and sad. Results demonstrated a striking and reliable effect of affective category on semantic priming. Neutral and happy prime-targets yielded significant semantic priming. Fearful pairs showed no or modest priming facilitation, and sad p...
متن کاملCross-Modal Semantic Priming
The cross-modal semantic priming paradigm is described, including its underlying rationale and the different tasks with which it is combined. The major characteristics of the paradigm—the type of stimuli used, the dependent and independent variables typically manipulated—are then introduced. Also, its main advantages and drawbacks are discussed. Finally, the most important areas of application ...

Cross-modal Repetition Priming
Multimodal speech perception has become a topic of considerable interest to speech researchers. Previous research has demonstrated that perceivers use information from the visual modality to inform the process of spoken word recognition. In this paper, we used a cross-modal repetition priming paradigm to explore questions about multimodal speech perception. First, we report that participants id...
متن کاملCross-Modal Integration of Lexical-Semantic Features during Word Processing: Evidence from Oscillatory Dynamics during EEG
In recent years, numerous studies have provided converging evidence that word meaning is partially stored in modality-specific cortical networks. However, little is known about the mechanisms supporting the integration of this distributed semantic content into coherent conceptual representations. In the current study we aimed to address this issue by using EEG to look at the spatial and tempora...
