Nitrogen under Super-Reducing Conditions: Ti Oxynitride Melts in Xenolithic Corundum Aggregates from Mt Carmel (N. Israel)

چکیده

Titanium oxynitrides (Ti(N,O,C)) are abundant in xenolithic corundum aggregates pyroclastic ejecta of Cretaceous volcanoes on Mount Carmel, northern Israel. Petrographic observations indicate that most these nitrides existed as melts, immiscible with coexisting silicate and Fe-Ti-C silicide melts; some may also have crystallized directly from the melts. The TiN phase shows a wide range solid solution, taking up 0–10 wt% carbon 1.7–17 oxygen; halite (fcc) structure common to synthetic natural TiN. Nitrides melts higher C/O than those Analyses no fall along TiN–TiO join Ti–N–O space, implying their Ti is mixture Ti3+ Ti2+, while 1–3 at.% C appear be solutions between Ti0.75O. >10 at% Ti2+/Ti3+, reflecting decrease fO2. Oxygen fugacity was 6 8 log units below iron–wüstite buffer, at or Ti2O3–TiO buffer. These relationships phases temperatures 1400–1100 °C. probably locally upper mantle, especially presence CH4–H2 fluids derived deeper metal-saturated mantle.

Oxynitride Glasses Prepared from Gels and Melts

The structures of glasses prepared by melting mixtures of alkali borosilicate glass and silicon nitride powders and by ammonolysis of porous borosilicate gels were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and combustion analysis. Whereas there was little evidence of nitride bond formation in the melt prepared glasses, Si-N and B-N bonding were observed in the gel-derlved glasses. I...

Scorpion Biodiversity and Interslope Divergence at “Evolution Canyon”, Lower Nahal Oren Microsite, Mt. Carmel, Israel

BACKGROUND Local natural laboratories, designated by us as the "Evolution Canyon" model, are excellent tools to study regional and global ecological dynamics across life. They present abiotic and biotic contrasts locally, permitting the pursuit of observations and experiments across diverse taxa sharing sharp microecological subdivisions. Higher solar radiation received by the "African savannah...

Adaptive Response to DNA-Damaging Agents in Natural Saccharomyces cerevisiae Populations from “Evolution Canyon”, Mt. Carmel, Israel

BACKGROUND Natural populations of most organisms, especially unicellular microorganisms, are constantly exposed to harsh environmental factors which affect their growth. UV radiation is one of the most important physical parameters which influences yeast growth in nature. Here we used 46 natural strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated from several natural populations at the "Evolution Cany...

Earliest floral grave lining from 13,700-11,700-y-old Natufian burials at Raqefet Cave, Mt. Carmel, Israel.

Flowering plants possess mechanisms that stimulate positive emotional and social responses in humans. It is difficult to establish when people started to use flowers in public and ceremonial events because of the scarcity of relevant evidence in the archaeological record. We report on uniquely preserved 13,700-11,700-y-old grave linings made of flowers, suggesting that such use began much earli...

Amyloid Aggregates Arise from Amino Acid Condensations under Prebiotic Conditions.

Current theories on the origin of life reveal significant gaps in our understanding of the mechanisms that allowed simple chemical precursors to coalesce into the complex polymers that are needed to sustain life. The volcanic gas carbonyl sulfide (COS) is known to catalyze the condensation of amino acids under aqueous conditions, but the reported di-, tri-, and tetra-peptides are too short to s...
