Niche partitioning amongst northwestern Mediterranean cetaceans using stable isotopes

چکیده
Ten species of cetaceans coexist in the Mediterranean Sea, one richest seas biodiversity and endemisms worldwide. The conservation status has been a concern for many years, particularly due to increasing anthropogenic threats such as global warming overfishing. We established stable isotopic niches carbon, nitrogen, sulphur five inhabiting northwestern Sea elucidate mechanisms coexistence. fin whale exploited epipelagic habitats with low trophic level; bottlenose dolphin was mostly neritic had high Risso’s oceanic fed bathypelagically at finally, common striped dolphins displayed distributions similarly intermediate levels. all were exclusive except dolphins, whose overlapped by 20%. These results suggest that majority avoid competitive exclusion or spatial segregation exception which interspecific competition is apparent. It suggested this brought displace from part its distribution range, restricting it southern fringe western and, particularly, Alboran Sea. In area, coexistence two would be permitted some degree between them remarkably productivity, mitigate competition.

Stable isotopes of captive cetaceans (killer whales and bottlenose dolphins).
There is currently a great deal of interest in using stable isotope methods to investigate diet, trophic level and migration in wild cetaceans. In order to correctly interpret the results stemming from these methods, it is crucial to understand how diet isotopic values are reflected in consumer tissues. In this study, we investigated patterns of isotopic discrimination between diet and blood co...
متن کاملSource Partitioning Using Stable Isotopes: Coping with Too Much Variation
BACKGROUND Stable isotope analysis is increasingly being utilised across broad areas of ecology and biology. Key to much of this work is the use of mixing models to estimate the proportion of sources contributing to a mixture such as in diet estimation. METHODOLOGY By accurately reflecting natural variation and uncertainty to generate robust probability estimates of source proportions, the ap...

Introduction Direct measurement of de novo lipogenesis has not previously been possible in humans. We measured de novo hepatic lipogenesis in normal men by means of stable isotopes and by combining the acetylated-xenobiotic probe technique with mass isotopomer analysis of secreted very low density lipoproteinfatty acids (VLDL-FA). Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was administered with ['3Clacetate during...
متن کاملSulfide invasion in the seagrass Posidonia oceanica at Mediterranean fish farms: assessment using stable sulfur isotopes
The effect of organic enrichment of sediments on the composition of stable sulfur isotopes (δ34S), sulfide invasion (Fsulfide) and concentrations of total sulfur (TS) and elemental sulfur (S0) in the seagrass Posidonia oceanica was investigated along transects from 3 Mediterranean fish farms in Spain, Italy and Greece. The δ34S decreased and Fsulfide, TS and S0 decreased with distance from the ...
