New techniques for breeding maize ( <scp> <i>Zea mays</i> </scp> ) varieties with fall armyworm resistance and market‐preferred traits for sub‐Saharan Africa

Deploying maize varieties with fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda [J.E. Smith]; FAW) resistance, desirable product profiles (PPs) and climate resilience is fundamental for food economic security in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study reviewed identified challenges opportunities effective accelerated breeding of demand-led hybrids FAW resistance adaptation to the diverse agro-ecologies SSA. Lessons were drawn on improving efficiency through adequate genetic variation delivered via prebreeding programmes, speed a reduced stage plan. Appropriate PPs aligned approaches highlighted as foundations variety design commercialization. Challenges included inadequate funds modern tools; poor some exotic donor parental lines; lack information among local varieties; integration molecular markers associated agronomic traits into selection plans; limited infrastructure rearing germplasm screening. Integration tools scientific innovations recommended development release resistant market-preferred varieties.
