Jump-independent approximation in conforming and nonconforming finite element spaces
A counterexample is given. It confirms that the conforming finite element is inappropriate for singular problems with large coefficient jumps. The Scott-Zhang operator is applied to a nonconforming finite element. It is shown that the nonconforming finite element provides the optimal order approximation in interpolation, in L-projection, and in solving elliptic differential equation, independen...
متن کاملSuperconvergence of new mixed finite element spaces
In this paper we prove some superconvergence of a new family of mixed finite element spaces of higher order we introduced in [ETNA, Vol.37, pp.189–201, 2010]. Among all the mixed finite element spaces having optimal order of convergence on quadrilateral grids, this space has the smallest unknowns. However, the scalar variable is only suboptimal in general; thus we have employed a post-processin...
متن کاملLow-order continuous finite element spaces on hybrid non-conforming hexahedral-tetrahedral meshes
This article deals with solving partial differential equations with the finite element method on hybrid non-conforming hexahedral-tetrahedral meshes. By non-conforming, we mean that a quadrangular face of a hexahedron can be connected to two triangular faces of tetrahedra. We introduce a set of low-order continuous (C) finite element spaces defined on these meshes. They are built from standard ...
متن کاملExplicit error bounds in a conforming finite element method
The goal of this paper is to define a procedure for bounding the error in a conforming finite element method. The new point is that this upper bound is fully explicit and can be computed locally. Numerical tests prove the efficiency of the method. It is presented here for the case of the Poisson equation and a first order finite element approximation.
متن کاملThe Coupling of Mixed and Conforming Finite Element Discretizations
In this paper, we introduce and analyze a special mortar finite element method. We restrict ourselves to the case of two disjoint subdomains, and use RaviartThomas finite elements in one subdomain and conforming finite elements in the other. In particular, this might be interesting for the coupling of different models and materials. Because of the different role of Dirichlet and Neumann boundar...
