New Experimental Tools to Use Noble Gases as Artificial Tracers for Groundwater Flow

چکیده
Labeling groundwater by injecting an artificial tracer is a standard and widely used method to study flow systems. Noble gases dissolved in are potentially ideal tracers, as they not subject biogeochemical transformations, do adsorb onto the aquifer matrix, colorless, have no negative impact on quality of resources. In addition, combining different noble-gas species multi-tracer tests would allow direct analysis spatio-temporal heterogeneity However, while handling noble safe straightforward for injection into groundwater, conventional methods analyse tend be impractical tests. The sampling subsequent lab-based laborious, expensive time intensive. Therefore, only researchers with access specialized labs attempted such recently developed gas-equilibrium membrane-inlet mass spectrometers (GE-MIMS) efficient on-site at high temporal resolution. GE-MIMS instruments thereby eliminate most analytical logistical constraints techniques therefore provide new opportunities using artificially injected gases. We systematically test applicability He, Kr, Xe tracers. Impact of artificial recharge on dissolved noble gases in groundwater in California.
Dissolved noble gas concentrations in groundwater can provide valuable information on recharge temperatures and enable 3H-3He age-dating with the use of physically based interpretive models. This study presents a large (905 samples) data set of dissolved noble gas concentrations from drinking water supply wells throughout California, representing a range of physiographic, climatic, and water ma...

متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Noble Gases as Natural Tracers for Injection Returns and Reservoir Processes in Vapor-dominated Systems
Noble gases have attributes and properties that make them very attractive as tracers for fluid movement and reservoir processes. Noble gases are non-reactive and most of them have no sinks or sources in the subsurface, rendering them conservative. They occur naturally in waters that have been in contact with the atmosphere in concentrations that depend on their solubilities. As solubilities are...
متن کاملDissolved gases as partitioning tracers for determination of hydrogeological parameters.
In this study, dissolved Kr and SF6 gases were used to determine various hydrogeological parameters of laboratory columns under water-saturated and partially saturated conditions as a function of the flow velocity. The dissolved gases behaved conservatively in saturated columns but were significantly retarded in unsaturated conditions as a direct function of the Henry's law constant (KH) and th...
