Global and Local Attention Processing in Depressed Mood

Background: Attention impairments are the hallmark feature of subclinical depression. The present study used Navon task to compare the allocation of attention to the local and global stimuli in depressed and nondepressed participants. Method: The primary sample included 186 female high school students from Shiraz city who were selected using cluster sampl...

Neural correlates of the automatic and goal-driven biases in orienting spatial attention.

How do stimuli in the environment interact with the goals of observers? We addressed this question by showing that the relevance of an abruptly appearing visual object (cue) changes how observers orient attention toward a subsequent object (target) and how this target is represented in the activity of neurons in the superior colliculus. Initially after the appearance of the cue, attention is dr...

Neural signatures of cognitive and emotional biases in depression

Functional brain imaging studies suggest that depression is a system-level disorder affecting discrete but functionally linked cortical and limbic structures, with abnormalities in the anterior cingulate, lateral, and medial prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Within this circuitry, abnormal corticolimbic interactions underlie cognitive deficits and emotional impairment in depression....

Dynamics of Automatic and Visual Attention Controlled

The time course of attention was experimentally observed using two kinds of stimuli: a cue to begin attending or to shift attention, and a stimulus to be attended. Precise measurements of the time course of attention show that it consists of two partially concurrent processes: a fast, effortless, automatic process that records the cue and its neighboring events; and a slower, effortful, control...

Local Versus Global Triangulations

Free form surfaces are commonly represented by triangular or quadrilateral meshes. Often these meshes are obtained from unorganized point sets sampled from some object’s surface. We show that local rather than global triangulations of point sets are equally well suited for object representations and that the local triangulations proposed in this paper may even lead to fast triangulation routines.
