چکیده

Abstract. The Mediterranean Sea comprises just 0.8 % of the global oceanic surface, yet considering its size, it is regarded as a disproportionately large sink for anthropogenic carbon due to physical and biogeochemical characteristics. An underwater glider mission was carried out in March–April 2016 close BOUSSOLE DyFAMed time series moorings northwestern Sea. deployment served test prototype ion-sensitive field-effect transistor pH sensor. Dissolved oxygen (O2) concentrations optical backscatter were also observed by increased between 19 March 1 April, along with pH. These changes indicated start phytoplankton spring bloom, following period intense mixing. Concurrent measurements CO2 fugacity O2 at mooring buoy showed fluctuations, qualitative agreement pattern measurements. Mean net community production rates (N) estimated from dissolved inorganic (DIC) concentrations, based on their mass budgets. Glider DIC derived salinity-based total alkalinity parameterisation, fugacity. spatial coverage data allowed calculation advective fluxes. N estimates euphotic zone 10 3 April (-17±36) O2, (44±94) DIC, (17±37) (49±86) mmolm-2d-1 all indicating metabolic balance over these 25 d. However, d actually split into increase decrease April. latter interpreted onset bloom. regression coefficients DIC-based 0.25 ± 0.08 0.54 0.06 buoy, significantly lower than canonical quotient 1.45±0.15. This study shows added value co-locating profiling moored buoys, but demonstrates difficulty estimating N, limitations achievable precision.

Ocean glider observations of iceberg-enhanced biological production in the northwestern Weddell Sea

Icebergs affect local biological production around Antarctica. We used an ocean glider to observe the effects of a large iceberg that was advected by the Antarctic Slope Current along the continental slope in the northwestern Weddell Sea in early 2012. The high-resolution glider data reveal a pronounced effect of the iceberg on ocean properties, with oxygen concentrations of (13 ± 4) μmol kg−1 ...

Net community production in the northeastern Chukchi Sea

and particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) were measured during the spring and summer of 2004 and compared to similar observations taken in 2002. Distinctive differences in hydrographic conditions were observed between these two years, allowing us to consider several factors that could impact NCP and carbon cycling in both the Chukchi Shelf and the adjacent Cana...

A New Glider-Compatible Optical Sensor for Dissolved Organic Matter Measurements: Test Case from the NW Mediterranean Sea

The MiniFluo-UV is a new glider-compatible optical sensor for measurements of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural waters. The working principle, sensor design and challenges faced during the validation phase are reported. The first in situ application of the sensor during three glider deployments in the NW Mediterranean sea (spring, summer, and fall) are also presented. For these campaign...

Net community production in the deep euphotic zone of the subtropical North Pacific gyre from glider surveys

Seagliders, deployed through most of 2005 in the subtropical North Pacific gyre, made measurements of temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen to quantify net community production (NCP) at Station A LongTerm Oligotrophic Habitat Assessment (ALOHA) of the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) using an oxygen mass balance approach. A ‘bowtie’-shaped pattern, 50 km by 50 km in size was repeatedly trav...

Submesoscale physical-biogeochemical coupling across the Ligurian Current (northwestern Mediterranean) using a bio-optical glider

A bio-optical autonomous underwater gliding vehicle, equipped with a conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD) sensor, an oxygen sensor, backscatter meters, chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and chlorophyll fluorometers, and upwelling and downwelling radiometers was developed to characterize the biogeochemical response to physical forcing at the submesoscale (1–10 km). Winter data obtai...
