Nest Material Preference of Wild Mouse Species in Laboratory Housing

نویسندگان

چکیده

Our research examined the nest-building characteristics of two mouse species native to Hungary, mound-building (Mus spicilegus) and house musculus), under laboratory housing conditions. In indoor housing, material plays a very important role in welfare animals. The present study how wild choose from natural nest material. three-way test, mice were able whether make their long blades hay, nonfibrous cotton, or paper strips. addition, effect composition on its quality was also investigated. test run at standard (21 °C) lower (10 temperatures, assuming that temperature influences choice. Based results selection tests, both chose hay highest proportion, it found increasing proportion coincided with better quality. Mice kept colder places used more for nests built nests. show prefer materials meet ecological needs even conditions, resulting good nest. This finding is worth considering designing appropriate enclosures rodent species.

The laboratory mouse and wild immunology.

The laboratory mouse, Mus musculus domesticus, has been the workhorse of the very successful laboratory study of mammalian immunology. These studies--discovering how the mammalian immune system can work--have allowed the development of the field of wild immunology that is seeking to understand how the immune responses of wild animals contributes to animals' fitness. Remarkably, there have hardl...

Circadian Rhythm of Outside-Nest Activity in Wild (WWCPS), Albino and Pigmented Laboratory Rats

The domestication process of the laboratory rat has been going on for several hundred generations in stable environmental conditions, which may have affected their physiological and behavioural functions, including their circadian system. Rats tested in our ethological experiments were laboratory-bred wild Norway rats (WWCPS), two strains of pigmented laboratory rats (Brown Norway and Long Evan...

Heat or Insulation: Behavioral Titration of Mouse Preference for Warmth or Access to a Nest

In laboratories, mice are housed at 20-24°C, which is below their lower critical temperature (≈30°C). This increased thermal stress has the potential to alter scientific outcomes. Nesting material should allow for improved behavioral thermoregulation and thus alleviate this thermal stress. Nesting behavior should change with temperature and material, and the choice between nesting or thermotaxi...

Cytogenetical Analysis of Iranian Wild Almond Species

In this study, the karyo-systematic studies on the Iranian wild almond species A .communis L., A. corduchoruom Bornm., A. trichamygdalus woronow, Amygdalus lycioides Var. horrida Spach were done by the karyological methods. The meristem cells of the root tip were used for these studies. In each species, ten suitable metaphase plates were chosen and photographed so that the morphology of the chr...

Nest Material Shapes Eggs Bacterial Environment.

Selective pressures imposed by pathogenic microorganisms to embryos have selected in hosts for a battery of antimicrobial lines of defenses that includes physical and chemical barriers. Due to the antimicrobial properties of volatile compounds of green plants and of chemicals of feather degrading bacteria, the use of aromatic plants and feathers for nest building has been suggested as one of th...
