چکیده
I study the effects of neighborhoods on perceived inequality and preferences for redistribution. Using administrative data universe dwellings real estate transactions in Barcelona (Spain), construct a novel measure local — Local Neighborhood Gini (LNG). The LNG is based spatial distribution housing within city, independent boundaries, building-specific. elicit perceptions redistribution from an original large-scale survey conducted Barcelona. link those to respondents' specific environments using exact addresses. find that one standard deviation increase associated with 4% higher inequality, but (if anything) lower demand Residential sorting explains counter-intuitive pattern. To causally identify environments, exploit within-neighborhood variation rise new apartment buildings as quasi-experiment. Exposure shifts by 7% 2.5%. finally cross-neighborhood information about experiment explore whether more distant also play role. treatment does not yield significant effects, consistent idea what close relevant. Neighborhoods shape (to lesser extent)

Redistributive Preferences, Redistribution, and Inequality: Evidence from a Panel of OECD Countries This paper describes individuals’ inequality perceptions, distributional norms, and redistributive preferences in a panel of OECD countries, primarily focusing on the association between these subjective measures and the effective level of inequality and redistribution. متن کاملSubjective Evaluations of Wage Inequality and Preferences for Redistribution
This paper analyzes subjective evaluations of the wage distribution and preferences for redistribution using Swiss data from the International Social Survey Program. Preferences for redistribution are conceptualized and measured as the discrepancy between the perceived and the just level of wage inequality. The results suggest that there is both considerable support for equalisation of wages an...
متن کاملEconomic development, income inequality and preferences for redistribution
Abstract: Adopting a cross-regional and global perspective, this article critically evaluates one of the core assertions of political economy approaches to welfare—that support for redistribution is inversely related to income. We hypothesize that economic self-interest gives way to more uniform support for redistribution in the interest of ensuring that basic or relative needs are met in less ...
متن کاملGlobalization, Inequality, and Redistribution: Theory and Evidence
This paper constructs a simple theoretical model to study the implications of globalization for inequality and redistribution. It shows that when globalization increases inequality, a policymaker interested in maximizing the sum of welfares of all agents increases redistribution. Empirically, the paper examines the e¤ects of globalization on inequality and redistribution in a panel data set of ...
متن کاملPreferences for Redistribution
This paper discusses what determines the preferences of individuals for redistribution. We review the theoretical literature and provide a framework to incorporate various effects previously studied separately in the literature. We then examine empirical evidence for the US, using the General Social Survey, and for a large set of countries, using the World Values Survey. The paper reviews previ...
