Needle stick injuries and their safety measures among nurses in Erbil Hospitals

Background: Needle stick injuries are serious professional hazards in the transfer of certain types blood borne diseases such as hepatitis B virus, C and human immunodeficiency virus among healthcare workers. Objective: Firstly, to determine prevalence factors related needle injuries. Secondly, assess safety measures nurses Erbil hospitals. Patients Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study including a sample 452 nurses. representative supple size was calculated by using Epi info version 7.The proportional population each hospital. convenient sampling technique adopted selection studied from different teaching hospitals city. Data were collected self-administered questionnaire, which included socio-demographic characteristics participants questions regarding preventive measures. (SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA), 26) applied for data entry analysis. P value ≤ 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: Out total (452) population, 56.9% females 43.1% males. The mean ± SD age 36.2 5.41, ranging 21 54 year. 87.4% nurses, widespread activity leading NSIs recapping needles (81%). average non-reporting supervisor infection control 77.2%. majority took place morning (70.5%). There significant association between use PPE, secure disposal box, auto-disable syringe during injection, highest those who not or sometimes above mentioned measures, (P<0.001, P=0.002, P=0.003 respectively).
