Near‐term challenges for global agriculture: Herbicide‐resistant weeds

Prior to the 1950s, weeds were controlled by a wide variety of mechanical and cultural methods with limited use inorganic chemicals at very high rates (100s kg ha–1). With advent selective carbon-based herbicides in herbicide weed management became norm throughout much world, using grams few kilograms active ingredient per hectare. However, benefits, there are problems. A resistant recognized 1970s, but 2021, 521 unique cases resistance have been documented world. It is imperative for farmers rethink paradigm researchers explore provide alternative so that today's maintain efficacy benefits into future. Near-term strategies include going back more integrated approaches, techniques, linking new technologies hit “many little hammers” rather than “sledge hammer” one or multiple herbicides.
