Near-inertial wave critical layers over sloping bathymetry

چکیده

This study describes a specific type of critical layer for near-inertial waves (NIWs) that forms when isopycnals run parallel to sloping bathymetry. Upon entering this slantwise layer, the group velocity decreases zero and NIWs become trapped amplified, which can enhance mixing. A realistic simulation anticyclonic eddies on Texas-Louisiana shelf reveals such layers form where impinge onto bottom. Velocity shear bands in indicate wind-forced are radiated downward from surface eddies, bend upward near bottom, enter over continental shelf, resulting inertially-modulated enhanced Idealized simulations designed capture flow reproduce wave propagation The link between mixing trapping is made using ray-tracing an analysis waves' energetics idealized simulations. An ensemble performed spanning relevant parameter space demonstrates strength correlated with degree layers. While application here shallow coastal setting, mechanisms could be active open ocean as well align

Effective coastal boundary conditions for tsunami wave run-up over sloping bathymetry

An effective boundary condition (EBC) is introduced as a novel technique for predicting tsunami wave runup along the coast, and offshore wave reflections. Numerical modeling of tsunami propagation in the coastal zone has been a daunting task, since high accuracy is needed to capture aspects of wave propagation in the shallower areas. For example, there are complicated interactions between incom...

Do Rossby-wave critical layers absorb, reflect, or over-reflect?

The Stewartson-Warn-Warn (SWW) solution for the time evolution of an inviscid, nonlinear Rossby-wave critical layer, which predicts that the critical layer will alternate between absorbing and over-reflecting states as time goes on, is shown to be hydrodynamically unstable. The instability is a two-dimensional shear instability, owing its existence to a local reversal of the cross-stream absolu...

Exact Solutions for Wind-Driven Coastal Upwelling and Downwelling over Sloping Bathymetry

The dynamics of wind-driven coastal upwelling and downwelling are studied using a simplified dynamical model. Exact solutions are examined as a function of time and over a family of sloping topographies. Assumptions in the two-dimensional model include a frictionless ocean interior below the surface Ekman layer, and no alongshore dependence of the variables; however, dependence in the cross-sho...

Nonlinear wave evolution equation for critical layers.

Recent studies of the evolution of weakly nonlinear long waves in shear flows have revealed that when the wave field contains a critical layer, a new nonlinear wave equation is needed to describe the wave evolution. This equation is of the same type as the well-known Korteweg-de Vries equation but has a more complicated nonlinear structure. Our main interest is in the steady solitary wave solut...

Adiabatic waves along interfacial layers near the critical point

Near the critical point, isothermal interfacial zones are investigated starting from a non-local density of energy. From the equations of motion of thermocapillary fluids [1], we point out a new kind of adiabatic waves propagating along the interfacial layers. The waves are associated with the second derivatives of densities and propagate with a celerity depending on the proximity of the critic...
