Expansive Homeomorphisms on Compact Manifolds
In this paper theorems are proved which provide for lifting and projecting expansive homeomorphisms through pseudocovering mappings so that the lift or projection is also an expansive homeomorphism. Using these techniques it is shown that the compact orientable surface of genus 2 admits an expansive homeomorphism.

This self-contained paper is part of a series [FF1, FF2] seeking to understand groups of homeomorphisms of manifolds in analogy with the theory of Lie groups and their discrete subgroups. Plante-Thurston proved that every nilpotent subgroup of Diff(S) is abelian. One of our main results is a sharp converse: Diff(S) contains every finitely-generated, torsion-free nilpotent group.

In this paper we study the classification of self-homeomorphisms of closed, connected, oriented 4-manifolds with infinite cyclic fundamental group up to pseudoisotopy, or equivalently up to homotopy.
