Navigating inclusion: ‘home-making’ in the UK Shin Buddhist community

This contribution focuses on narratives and experiences of belonging exclusion among convert members Three Wheels, a Japanese Shin Buddhist temple in London, to investigate how difference is incorporated into transnational Buddhism. whose include both diasporic Europeans, occupies marginal position within Buddhism the UK’s (and broader religious) landscape. By embracing individual collective marginality, I argue, priests foster affective connections that allow for shared minority space emerge where its diverse can feel at home. To explore dynamics this ‘home-making’, focus specifically negotiate their own community processes inclusion through which they navigate linguistic, religious, cultural barriers encounter as tradition. discussion home-making Wheels highlights complex status marginality It also shows how, case, Buddhists have worked with Asian migrants build what appears be successful mixed local sangha accommodates needs members.
