Nature-based tourism as an alternative for sustainable development in the Altas Montañas de Veracruz region, Mexico

Objective: Determine the current state of nature-based tourism in High Mountains Region Veracruz, Mexico, by analysis participatory workshop results with most municipal managers region.Design/methodology/approach: A took place, “1st. Nature-based Tourism Forum Altas Montañas de Veracruz Region”, for which an evaluation instrument was elaborated. The questionnaire, called “Technical Sheet Diagnosis and Inventory Touristic Initiatives”, filled participants. During this workshop, region divided into five subregions participants worked separate tables subregion.Results: 106 consolidated projects were registered, 38 process 130 elements potential identified; 53 problems that affect also identified. total 123 people participated: 61 them representing 32 municipalities, 16 from seven 12 represented institutions 34 organizers.Limitations study/implications: greatest limitation faced project participation all authorities throughout whole region.Findings/conclusions: Out 57 municipalities attended (more than 56%). number (106) is high, considering 44% not present, highlights majority are thecommunity private management. However, aren organized indicates their interest tourism. Regard touristic (natural historical sites traditions), registered high (130). This a consequence great biocultural wealth area, can be developed conserved through ecotourism.
