Natural Polymers Used in Edible Food Packaging—History, Function and Application Trends as a Sustainable Alternative to Synthetic Plastic

In this review, a historical perspective, functional and application trends of natural polymers used to the development edible food packaging were presented discussed. Polysaccharides proteins, i.e., alginate; carrageenan; chitosan; starch; pea protein, considered. These are important materials obtained from renewable plant, algae animal sources, as well agroindustrial residues. Historically, some them have been widely by ancient populations for until these replaced petroleum-based plastic after World War II. Nowadays, biobased attracted attention. Their use was boosted especially because environmental pollution caused inappropriate disposal packaging. Biobased welcome design they possess many advantages, such biodegradability, biocompatibility low toxicity. Depending on formulation, certain biopolymer-based may present good barrier properties, antimicrobial antioxidant activities Thus, polysaccharides proteins can be combined form diverse composite films with improved mechanical biological behaviors, making suitable different products.
