Natural Pest Regulation and Its Compatibility with Other Crop Protection Practices in Smallholder Bean Farming Systems

چکیده

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) production and storage are limited by numerous constraints. Insect pests often the most destructive. However, resource-constrained smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) do little to manage pests. Where farmers use a control strategy, it typically relies on chemical pesticides, which have adverse effects wildlife, crop pollinators, natural enemies, mammals, development of resistance Nature-based solutions —in particular, using biological agents with sustainable approaches that include biopesticides, resistant varieties, cultural tools—are alternatives control. significant barriers their adoption SSA lack field data knowledge enemies pests, safety, efficacy, spectrum activities, availability costs sources for different cultivars, spatial temporal inconsistencies methods. Here, we critically review options particularly black aphid (Aphis fabae) pod borers (Maruca vitrata). We identified pest regulation as option greatest potential this farming system. recommend adapt due its compatibility other approaches, such tools, biopesticides effective management, especially SSA.

Natural products in crop protection.

The tremendous increase in crop yields associated with the 'green' revolution has been possible in part by the discovery and utilization of chemicals for pest control. However, concerns over the potential impact of pesticides on human health and the environment has led to the introduction of new pesticide registration procedures, such as the Food Quality Protection Act in the United States. The...

Crop Residue Management in Conservation Agriculture Systems in Zimbabwe Smallholder Farming Sector: Importance, Management Challenges and Possible Solutions

Conservation agriculture (CA) is promoted as a cropping system that has potential to alleviate poor crop yields in smallholder farming while protecting the environment. It involves maintenance of permanent soil cover, diverse crop rotations and/or interactions; and minimum soil disturbance. CA is associated with crop residue management challenges due to low crop biomass yields and crop-livestoc...

Constraints in the Smallholder Farming Systems of Zimbabwe

This paper reviews constraints to crop production, the status of technology development and future research needs of the smallholder farms in the semi-arid areas of Zimbabwe. ZIMBABWE'S agricultural industry consists of two major sectors; the large-scale commercial and the smallholder (communal) sectors. Prior to 1980 production from the communal sector was largely for subsistence requirements....
